Tips to Help Prevent Your Divorce from Being an Obsession

It is only natural for your divorce to play a central role in your life. However, there is a point at which some people can become so obsessed about their divorces that they stop functioning normally.

This is not only emotionally and physically damaging, but it may also interfere with your attorney’s ability to be an effective advocate.

Maintaining Perspective: Don’t Become Obsessed

It’s important that you maintain your perspective during divorce. So what can you do?

  1. Try to maintain balance in your life.
  2. Whether you own your own business or professional practice or you’re employed by someone else, your workday will give you a chance to get away from thinking about your divorce. Use that opportunity. Schedule appointments with your attorney at a time that’s least disruptive to your work schedule. Above all, keep your divorce out of your workplace.
  3.  If you have been a stay-at-home spouse, now is the time to establish a daily routine for yourself. The schedule should not allow you to spend more than one hour per day discussing or dealing with your divorce, except, of course, when more time is absolutely necessary (such as attending a court hearing). Stick to your schedule.
  4. If you and your spouse are communicating, keep the telephone calls, text messages and emails short. Do not discuss your case with your spouse. You’ll only be putting yourself through emotional turmoil, which can even increase your legal costs if you feel compelled to call your attorney as soon as you hang up with your ex.
  5. Exercise daily, limit your alcohol intake and get as much rest as possible.
  6. Distract yourself with positive people and activities. Find a new hobby, go out with friends, watch upbeat movies or do anything else you love.
  7. Take up meditation or yoga to free your mind, body and spirit.
  8. Get professional counseling if you need it.
